Races and Running Buns
| October 10, 2011 | Posted by Sweet Tooth Runner under Races |
HEY friends!! Thanks for the good luck messages and advice about my race! It was SO GREAT!!
I started my morning with my usual pre-run fuel:![]()
Banana oatmeal with chopped dates.
I then got dressed in my race stuff and ready to go! My race didn’t actually start until 1.20pm but the other age groups started from 11am so we went to cheer them on, and we needed to walk the course beforehand anyway. Race outfit:
![]()
My running team provided the top and shorts. These were the shortest shorts I have ever worn in my life!! Comfy yes, but too short for my liking!!
AND they rode up when I was running! Running buns are not my friend. Yet.
I also broke every rule in the book by wearing all NEW clothes. New team vest, new buns, and new shoes! I knew it wouldn’t matter much though for a short race, so I just rolled with it.
Asics Hyper-Rocketgirl XC spikes. I originally bought Nike Waffles (purely because of the name
) but they were too wide for my feet. Don’t tell anyone but I wore my spikes a bit around the house and made one huge scratch in the laminate flooring…oops! ![]()
It was the PERFECT running conditions, and a beautiful course!
I walked the course twice before the start to make sure I knew the route:
It was two laps of the course (the red loop), plus a bit extra on the second lap (the blue wooded loop on the left hand side), and I decided I officially hate two lap courses! Going past the finish line knowing you’re less than halfway is tough!!
So I had two hours to kill before my race started, which I used to munch on my pre-race snack…
…and to cheer on the other age groups. I caught our youngest age group going off:
Our team did did AMAZING in this age group, finishing 2nd, 3rd, 4th, 5th and 7th!! Now that is TEAM running!! ![]()
Aaaand then my camera died. Guess which idiot left the spare batteries at home? So instead of a photo of me finishing (definitely a good thing- I looked like I was dying), here is a visual representation:
I can see I have a future in graphic design for sure
That person apparently squat-jogging up the hill is yours truly, closing down on a rival who I had been shadowing the whole race. I was closing the gap in the last 200m up that hill mountain and I could feel myself pulling a Mo Farah face with the effort:
And I BEAT HER by an inch!! I then almost passed out and had to be held up by the race marshals- trust me to be the drama queen!
I recovered quickly (I had just pushed myself too hard-nothing major!) and did a little cooldown jog and stretching.
I didn’t wear my Garmin in the race (decided just to run by feel, which I later regretted!) and there was no race clock annoyingly, so I had no idea of my time until I saw the results come up on the website later! I came 12th out of the 98 runners in my age group with a time of 14.59 for approx 3600m (which I am very happy with considering the hills and that it’s the first race of the season!). I also broke my team’s record for the highest placing debut runner in this race! WIN! ![]()
When I got back, I had a hot/ice cold shower and downed a recovery smoothie:![]()
1 frozen banana, 1 scoop vanilla protein powder, 3/4 cup vanilla soy milk, 3 dates.
I did some ‘active recovery’ later with a Whole Foods trip because I was dying for some canned pumpkin. All that walking up and down the aisles did me a lot of good, as did the taster table:![]()
I think you can guess where I stood munching away for 5 minutes ![]()
Some of the highlights of my haul:
An new-to-me crunchy PB, refried black beans (which were buy one, get one free and they are TOTALLY addictive!), canned pumpkin x 10000 cans, my fave granola, a spicy pinto bean dip, and some vegan sea salt dark chocolate! I cried when I found out my fave chocolate- Lindt Sea Salt- wasn’t vegan, so I was unbelievably happy when I found this!!
The very best thing though was the slice of Peanut Butter cream tart I bought!![]()
The photo does it no justice. It was beyond words. I am DEFINITELY going to recreate this!!
And today, despite the race, I had NO aches or pains, which was a first! Shows what good recovery (i.e. stretching, hot/cold showers, post-race nutrition, shopping, and cream tarts) can do for you! ![]()
This post is long enough already, so my Sunday shenanigans (we’re talking PANCAKES here obviously) are coming at you tomorrow!
What was the toughest race you’ve ever run? This one was tough- I think I’m more suited to slightly longer distances! And cross country was a bit of a shock since it is SO much tougher than running on roads!! But much more fun ![]()
Are you a pumpkin fan? I LOVE IT!! Major obsession!!
What is your opinion on shorts length? Do you mind short shorts or not? I’ll get used to them I guess!! According to my coach, our race outfit for track season is crop tops and bikini-bottom style buns. I’m not sure if he was joking seeing my reaction to these shorts but I think he was serious…!
Hope you’ve all had a great weekend! <3
Whole Foods missions!

Hello lovelies! ![]()
Today was the big Whole Foods trip! Before I set out on my quest, I managed to squeeze in a quick 45 min gym workout: 5 min elliptical warm-up, 20 min speed intervals (1 min 8mph-1 min 12mph repeated) on the treadmill and 20 mins speed intervals on the elliptical. The gym was practically empty today, which was weird because it has been teeming with people recently! So let’s play Where’s Wally! But with Emma instead…
Did you spot me? I’m in the middle in red. It was just me and that guy you can kinda see on the treadmill in the right corner. It was nice having some quality alone time with him! ![]()
My breakfast to fuel my workout was Ultra Bran cereal+coconut milk+ a banana:![]()
So after my workout, it was Whole Foods time! ![]()
![]()
I knew exactly where to head first. Mission 1: Get Dark Chocolate Dreams nut butter! But alas, it was not to be seen!![]()
The shelf label was there, but there was just loads of crunchy and smooth nut butter! PANIC! So of course, I did what all sane people do in this situation. I sat down in the aisle and took out the jars one by one to see if there was one behind them. Anything to find my Dark Chocolate Dreams!![]()
There was one! Just one! Success! Although the people around me clearly thought I was insane, not only for wreaking havoc with the nut butter but for then squealing (yes, I squealed with joy about finding nut butter!) and proceeding to photograph it!
I’m sure Whole Foods will have learnt their lesson about not leaving free food lying around when I visit for next time! ![]()
I ended up buying the following:![]()
Mission 4: Have an amazing lunch at WF. I thought about going down the salad bar route…![]()
…but wanted to try something different! Much as I love the salad bar (and I really do!), I wanted to check out the vegan and raw foods restaurant upstairs.![]()
I was in a hurry sadly, so I didn’t have time to enjoy their sit-down menu, which looked awesome, but instead looked at the take-out options:![]()
I can honestly say this was the best wrap/sandwich I have ever had! So filling and flavoursome!![]()
And check out this stellar ingredients list:![]()
I have never seen nutritional yeast listed in sandwich ingredients before! Or quinoa and flax seed oil for that matter!
The busy day continued after the WF trip with the annual Christmas food shop with my mum, where the bill came to over £160!
So since I got back late from that (3 days before Christmas=supermarket madness!), I threw together a quick meal: wholewheat noodles in soy sauce with basil tofu and a side of baby carrots:![]()
I’m so excited about my WF purchases! I especially can’t wait to make Katie’s Coconut Butter Melties and Chocolate Peanut Butter Melties!
Tomorrow morning I’m going to be making the vegan chocolate cupcakes I mentioned yesterday to take to a friend’s party! Can’t wait to get my bake on again! So stay tuned to see those!
And my Amazon package finally arrived! So happy! Now I have all my presents and cards, and just need to wrap! Whoop! ![]()
So what about you? How ready are you for Christmas Day? Only 2 and a bit days to go now!!! And what is the best sandwich filler combo you’ve ever had? Obviously sundried tomato+nut cheese is the winner in my book!
Merry Christmas to you! ![]()
The London Running Show and a trip to Whole Foods!
| November 27, 2010 | Posted by Sweet Tooth Runner under Uncategorized |
SUCH a good day today! And a good day always starts in a good way I always say…!![]()
My first ever bowl of stovetop oatmeal! I always tell people they should try it but had never actually tried it myself until today! ![]()
![]()
Made Kath-style! 1/2 cup oats, 1/2 cup oat milk, 1/2 cup water and some banana:![]()
As always, it included lots of this:![]()
Also mixed in oatbran and topped with the remaining banana and yet more cinnamon:![]()
So SO creamy! Definitely better texture than microwaved, but it does take a lot longer. And then there’s the extra washing-up of course…![]()
But I guess on the weekends that’s fine! Would love to try an apple+cinnamon version of this! Maybe tomorrow…
Anyway, in the afternoon, I visited the London Running Show!![]()
There were so many exhibitors, from running magazines to charities, to companies like Brooks and Gu.![]()
There were also seminars, and I attended one on ‘Yoga for Runners’ which was really interesting and informative. The speaker talked about the best postures and types of yoga for runners, and how yoga benefits runners. There many other seminars too- the one on running injuries was especially popular. A photo of one of the ‘seminar theatres’:![]()
The best bit though was obviously the free stuff! I got to try so much food (the Clif bars were my favourite) and this is some of the swag I got:![]()
Water, Powerade Zero, Energy Gel, two ‘NRG’ energy bars and an Eat Natural bar. I also got a free gait analysis, which was great! ![]()
I then took advantage of the direct Underground link to the Whole Foods Market Kensington stop. This is the biggest Whole Foods in the UK and it is amazing. What made it even better was that it was all Christmasy!![]()
This was a new addition to the bulk bin section here:![]()
![]()
![]()
Nut butters! I loved how it was almost make-it-yourself style! I really wanted to try the pecan, but it wasn’t cheap. Maybe next time though! ![]()
There were so many samples to try today, which I took full advantage of. I tried pumpkin pie for the first time:![]()
We Brits are totally missing out! I may have gone back for seconds…
Look at all this canned pumpkin! ![]()
I have seen pita chips a lot on American food blogs, and Whole Foods had tasters! They are so addictive!![]()
And the taster table was unmanned! So guess where I spent a good few minutes hovering?
The chilli flavour was the best. I was tempted to buy some, but I knew it would be a bit of a waste of money, as I’d finish them in no time at all! Budget restraints in the run up to Christmas suck! For this reason, I also put these into my basket, then put back:![]()
But I still ended up with a ton of great stuff that I had never tried before, including:![]()
Smoked tofu, tempeh, Nakd banana bread bar, Bodymatter organic no-added sugar granola and dark chocolate with cocoa nibs! ![]()
I’m going to see Harry Potter 7 tomorrow!!
I can’t wait!! Have you seen the new Harry Potter yet? If so, what did you think?
