Races and Running Buns

HEY friends!! Thanks for the good luck messages and advice about my race! It was SO GREAT!!

I started my morning with my usual pre-run fuel:DSCF1755

Banana oatmeal with chopped dates.

I then got dressed in my race stuff and ready to go! My race didn’t actually start until 1.20pm but the other age groups started from 11am so we went to cheer them on, and we needed to walk the course beforehand anyway. Race outfit:

DSCF1759

My running team provided the top and shorts. These were the shortest shorts I have ever worn in my life!! Comfy yes,  but too short for my liking!!

DSCF1817

AND they rode up when I was running! Running buns are not my friend. Yet.

I also broke every rule in the book by wearing all NEW clothes. New team vest, new buns, and new shoes! I knew it wouldn’t matter much though for a short race, so I just rolled with it.

DSCF1762

Asics Hyper-Rocketgirl XC spikes. I originally bought Nike Waffles (purely because of the name Winking smile ) but they were too wide for my feet. Don’t tell anyone but I wore my spikes a bit around the house and made one huge scratch in the laminate flooring…oops! Smile with tongue out

It was the PERFECT running conditions, and a beautiful course!

I walked the course twice before the start to make sure I knew the route:

Fullscreen capture 09102011 084042

It was two laps of the course (the red loop), plus a bit extra on the second lap (the blue wooded loop on the left hand side), and I decided I officially hate two lap courses! Going past the finish line knowing you’re less than halfway is tough!!

So I had two hours to kill before my race started, which I used to munch on my pre-race snack…

DSCF1807

…and to cheer on the other age groups. I caught our youngest age group going off:

U15Girlsstart2KentXC1-2010

Our team did did AMAZING in this age group, finishing 2nd, 3rd, 4th, 5th and 7th!! Now that is TEAM running!! Open-mouthed smile

Aaaand then my camera died. Guess which idiot left the spare batteries at home? So instead of a photo of me finishing (definitely a good thing- I looked like I was dying), here is a visual representation:

Untitled

I can see I have a future in graphic design for sure Winking smile That person apparently squat-jogging up the hill is yours truly, closing down on a rival who I had been shadowing the whole race. I was closing the gap in the last 200m up that hill mountain and I could feel myself pulling a Mo Farah face with the effort:

mo_farah_1982679c

And I BEAT HER by an inch!! I then almost passed out and had to be held up by the race marshals- trust me to be the drama queen! Smile with tongue out I recovered quickly (I had just pushed myself too hard-nothing major!) and did a little cooldown jog and stretching.

I didn’t wear my Garmin in the race (decided just to run by feel, which I later regretted!) and there was no race clock annoyingly, so I had no idea of my time until I saw the results come up on the website later! I came 12th out of the 98 runners in my age group with a time of 14.59 for approx 3600m (which I am very happy with considering the hills and that it’s the first race of the season!). I also broke my team’s record for the highest placing debut runner in this race! WIN! Open-mouthed smile

When I got back, I had a hot/ice cold shower and downed a recovery smoothie:DSCF1767

1 frozen banana, 1 scoop vanilla protein powder, 3/4 cup vanilla soy milk, 3 dates.

I did some ‘active recovery’ later with a Whole Foods trip because I was dying for some canned pumpkin. All that walking up and down the aisles did me a lot of good, as did the taster table:DSCF1769

I think you can guess where I stood munching away for 5 minutes Winking smile

Some of the highlights of my haul:

DSCF1771

An new-to-me crunchy PB, refried black beans (which were buy one, get one free and they are TOTALLY addictive!), canned pumpkin x 10000 cans, my fave granola, a spicy pinto bean dip, and some vegan sea salt dark chocolate! I cried when I found out my fave chocolate- Lindt Sea Salt- wasn’t vegan, so I was unbelievably happy when I found this!!

The very best thing though was the slice of Peanut Butter cream tart I bought!DSCF1778

DSCF1789

The photo does it no justice. It was beyond words. I am DEFINITELY going to recreate this!!

And today, despite the race, I had NO aches or pains, which was a first! Shows what good recovery (i.e. stretching, hot/cold showers, post-race nutrition, shopping, and cream tarts) can do for you! Smile with tongue out

This post is long enough already, so my Sunday shenanigans (we’re talking PANCAKES here obviously) are coming at you tomorrow!

What was the toughest race you’ve ever run? This one was tough- I think I’m more suited to slightly longer distances! And cross country was a bit of a shock since it is SO much tougher than running on roads!! But much more fun Smile

Are you a pumpkin fan? I LOVE IT!! Major obsession!!

What is your opinion on shorts length? Do you mind short shorts or not? I’ll get used to them I guess!! According to my coach, our race outfit for track season is crop tops and bikini-bottom style buns. I’m not sure if he was joking seeing my reaction to these shorts but I think he was serious…!

Hope you’ve all had a great weekend! <3

You know life is good when…

Today was actually the BEST DAY EVER!! Other than Christmas. And my birthday… Well anyway, it was SO MUCH FUN! Open-mouthed smile

You know life is good when you start the day in a chocolaty way.  I love a good ryhyme almost as much as I love breakfast cake:

DSC06926

Made with cocoa powder, PB and jam, and topped with coconut butter and shredded coconut :)

You’d better believe I ate that whole thing! Winking smile Monday Special Breakfasts are the BOMB!!

You know life is good when lunch is munched (rhyme time! Smile with tongue out) at the Hummus Bros hummus bar!Hummus is definitely where MY heart is!! My mushroom hummus bowl, served with a side of warm wholemeal pitta.DSC06934

DSC06932

THE best hummus I have ever tasted, hands down. This is my new home. Henceforth I shall be Crazy Hummus Girl.

You know life is good when you hit  not just one, but two Whole Foods stores!DSC06930

DSC06945

I went to my usual WF first (Kensington- the biggest one!) and then on to the hummus bar, which happened to be a street away from another WF!! I ended up buying stuff from both of course…my poor bank balance…!

trhs

You know life is good when you discover they now sell the BIG tubs of Dark Chocolate Dreams!! I couldn’t resist! Smile with tongue outDSC06931

My haul included:

DSC06957

Unsweetened applesauce and coconut oil for baking and DCD.

DSC06956

Bar madness! 2 Trek bars, my 2 fave Nakd bars and 3 Clif bar flavours

DSC06961

Brown rice syrup, chia seed and raspberry+coconut dark choccie!! Had to get some chocolate of course! :P

You know life is good when you have an amazing friend, who takes you to a cafe a few streets away that sells vegan cakes. Hello chocolate raspberry torte.DSC06941

Mrs Marengo’s is my second home now. Fortunately very close to my first home.DSC06943

Took the torte to-go and enjoyed on the train journey home. My fellow passengers were clearly beyond jealous, but slightly weirded out by my excessive ‘MMMmmmm’ing…DSC06946

DSC06949

Seriously, I am RECREATING this as soon as I figure out how…so delicious…so decadent…

You know life is good when you have a rockin’ hour of cross-training of speed intervals on the elliptical whilst listening to this:

[youtube=http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=e1_B9FCZJMA&w=448&h=252&hd=1]

On repeat. For pretty much the full hour. Yes, I danced along too. I could tell by the expressions of my fellow gym-ers that they wanted to join me really badly…

You know life is good when you get your life’s essentials on the way home from the gym:

4 packs of dates and brocccoli :)

I was seriously panicked for a while, but order has now been restored. It’s okay. Smile

hgera

So now it’s your turn: You know life is good when…?

gser

If you could live in one restaurant/cafe, what would it be? It used to be Starbucks for their gingerbread lattes, but hummus and chocolate torte have trumped it! Open-mouthed smile

grea

Do you have a bar stash? Seriously, I have a whole cardboard box of snack bars, and the lid won’t shut any more after today’s additions! Smile with tongue out

grea

OH, and on the whole bar thing, I had two UK-US foodie swaps organised, but they’ve BOTH had to drop out sadly! (I know it’s not your fault guys, chillax, I still love ya!!) So an exciting thing for YOU is that YOU can do a lil’ foodie swap with ME if ya like! Shoot me an email if you’re interested at sweet_tooth_runner@hotmail.co.uk or leave a comment! Cool! Smile

grea

Alrighty, so have a GREAT week friends!!

P.S. I have a VERY exciting event I’m going to on Wednesday!! Tell you all tomorrow :)

Whole Foods missions!

Hello lovelies! Smile

Today was the big Whole Foods trip! Before I set out on my quest, I managed to squeeze in a quick 45 min gym workout: 5 min elliptical warm-up, 20 min speed intervals (1 min 8mph-1 min 12mph repeated) on the treadmill and 20 mins speed intervals on the elliptical. The gym was practically empty today, which was weird because it has been teeming with people recently! So let’s play Where’s Wally! But with Emma instead…

DSC04786Did you spot me? I’m in the middle in red. It was just me and that guy you can kinda see on the treadmill in the right corner. It was nice having some quality alone time with him! Winking smile

My breakfast to fuel my workout was Ultra Bran cereal+coconut milk+ a banana:DSC04756

DSC04759

So after my workout, it was Whole Foods time! Open-mouthed smileDSC04785

I knew exactly where to head first. Mission 1: Get Dark Chocolate Dreams nut butter! But alas, it was not to be seen!DSC04760

The shelf label was there, but there was just loads of crunchy and smooth nut butter! PANIC! So of course, I did what all sane people do in this situation. I sat down in the aisle and took out the jars one by one to see if there was one behind them. Anything to find my Dark Chocolate Dreams!DSC04762

There was one! Just one! Success! Although the people around me clearly thought I was insane, not only for wreaking havoc with the nut butter but for then squealing (yes, I squealed with joy about finding nut butter!) and proceeding to photograph it!

Mission 2: Hit all the taster tables. The best thing about Whole Foods is definitely all the unmanned taster tables! Winking smile

Tyrell's natural chips

Dark chocolate!

DSC04770

'Corn chips' with salsa and guacamole for dipping :)

DSC04777

Tyrell's dried vegetable chips

I’m sure Whole Foods will have learnt their lesson about not leaving free food lying around when I visit for next time! Smile with tongue out

I ended up buying the following:DSC04795

DSC04810

Optimum cereal instead of Bodymatter granola. A cereal with cinnamon? I couldn't resist!

DSC04799

Raw coconut butter and my well-earned DCD!

DSC04800

New Nakd flavours for me! Ginger bread and Cocoa delight.

DSC04803

Unsweetened applesauce for baking :)

Mission 3: Try not to go into overdraft. So I considered buying these, but put them back cos they were too darn expensive!

DSC04775

Montezuma's banana and pecan chocolate block

Mission 4: Have an amazing lunch at WF. I thought about going down the salad bar route…DSC04776

…but wanted to try something different! Much as I love the salad bar (and I really do!), I wanted to check out the vegan and raw foods restaurant upstairs.index_saf-recipebox-1_1_2_140244218

I was in a hurry sadly, so I didn’t have time to enjoy their sit-down menu, which looked awesome, but instead looked at the take-out options:DSC04778

DSC04779I opted forDSC04781

DSC04782

I can honestly say this was the best wrap/sandwich I have ever had! So filling and flavoursome!DSC04784

And check out this stellar ingredients list:DSC04783

I have never seen nutritional yeast listed in sandwich ingredients before! Or quinoa and flax seed oil for that matter!

The busy day continued after the WF trip with the annual Christmas food shop with my mum, where the bill came to over £160! Surprised smile So since I got back late from that (3 days before Christmas=supermarket madness!), I threw together a quick meal: wholewheat noodles in soy sauce with basil tofu and a side of baby carrots:DSC04804

344706530_007a7873eb

I’m so excited about my WF purchases! I especially can’t wait to make Katie’s Coconut Butter Melties and Chocolate Peanut Butter Melties! Open-mouthed smile

Tomorrow morning I’m going to be making the vegan chocolate cupcakes I mentioned yesterday to take to a friend’s party! Can’t wait to get my bake on again! So stay tuned to see those!

And my Amazon package finally arrived! So happy! Now I have all my presents and cards, and just need to wrap! Whoop! Open-mouthed smile

So what about you? How ready are you for Christmas Day? Only 2 and a bit days to go now!!! And what is the best sandwich filler combo you’ve ever had? Obviously sundried tomato+nut cheese is the winner in my book!

Merry Christmas to you! Smile

The London Running Show and a trip to Whole Foods!

SUCH a good day today! And a good day always starts in a good way I always say…!DSC04068

My first ever bowl of stovetop oatmeal! I always tell people they should try it but had never actually tried it myself until today! Smile with tongue outDSC04070

Made Kath-style! 1/2 cup oats, 1/2 cup oat milk, 1/2 cup water and some banana:DSC04069

As always, it included lots of this:DSC04071

Also mixed in oatbran and topped with the remaining banana and yet more cinnamon:DSC04078

So SO creamy! Definitely better texture than microwaved, but it does take a lot longer. And then there’s the extra washing-up of course…DSC04080

But I guess on the weekends that’s fine! Would love to try an apple+cinnamon version of this! Maybe tomorrow…

Anyway, in the afternoon, I visited the London Running Show!DSC04103

There were so many exhibitors, from running magazines to charities, to companies like Brooks and Gu.DSC04082

There were also seminars, and I attended one on ‘Yoga for Runners’ which was really interesting and informative. The speaker talked about the best postures and types of yoga for runners, and how yoga benefits runners. There many other seminars too- the one on running injuries was especially popular. A photo of one of the ‘seminar theatres’:DSC04081

The best bit though was obviously the free stuff! I got to try so much food (the Clif bars were my favourite) and this is some of the swag I got:DSC04096

Water, Powerade Zero, Energy Gel, two ‘NRG’ energy bars and an Eat Natural bar. I also got a free gait analysis, which was great! Open-mouthed smile

I then took advantage of the direct Underground link to the Whole Foods Market Kensington stop. This is the biggest Whole Foods in the UK and it is amazing. What made it even better was that it was all Christmasy!DSC04094

This was a new addition to the bulk bin section here:DSC04090DSC04089DSC04088

Nut butters! I loved how it was almost make-it-yourself style! I really wanted to try the pecan, but it wasn’t cheap. Maybe next time though! Smile

There were so many samples to try today, which I took full advantage of. I tried pumpkin pie for the first time:DSC04083

We Brits are totally missing out! I may have gone back for seconds… Winking smile Look at all this canned pumpkin! DSC04084

I have seen pita chips a lot on American food blogs, and Whole Foods had tasters! They are so addictive!DSC04086

And the taster table was unmanned! So guess where I spent a good few minutes hovering? Smile with tongue out The chilli flavour was the best. I was tempted to buy some, but I knew it would be a bit of a waste of money, as I’d finish them in no time at all! Budget restraints in the run up to Christmas suck! For this reason, I also put these into my basket, then put back:DSC04085

DSC04087

But I still ended up with a ton of great stuff that I had never tried before, including:DSC04100

DSC04098

DSC04101

Smoked tofu, tempeh, Nakd banana bread bar, Bodymatter organic no-added sugar granola and dark chocolate with cocoa nibs! Smile

I’m going to see Harry Potter 7 tomorrow!! Open-mouthed smile I can’t wait!! Have you seen the new Harry Potter yet? If so, what did you think?
