A Dancing Monkey
| October 24, 2011 | Posted by Sweet Tooth Runner under Uncategorized |
So a lil’ weekend recap for you!
Friday night was party time. And I party hard…

Yup, monkeys like to shake their butts on the dance floor just as much as anyone. Although they do get tired and end up crashing on the couch in the early hours of the morning.
And then I had to get up at 7am for rehearsals, after four hours sleep. I wasn’t a pretty sight, I can tell you that! ![]()
Saturday was spent lying on the sofa watching Gilmore Girls (non-active recovery) and shopping (active recovery). You know you’re a runner when you get excited over buying (cool compression) socks.![]()
Ok, so I mainly bought them for warmth rather than compression purposes, but has anyone used compression stuff before? Thoughts?
There was also recovery in muffin-pudding form:![]()
Crumbled muffin in caramel pudding warmed up is sooo good!
On Sunday we had a big family get-together, and I was in charge of dessert, so I made Oh She Glows’ Chilled Chocolate Torte. It was amazing!!
Sometimes self-control is just overrated. This was one of those times.![]()
The meal itself was delicious too:
Nut roast, roast potatoes, carrots and green beans all swimming in (vegan) gravy. I went back for seconds of everything. And thirds of the roasties ![]()
This coming week I am really excited about, because I am working in a hospital, shadowing doctors. And at the beginning of next year, I’ve got a placement in the biggest sports medicine clinic in the UK, and I can’t wait for that too!! So I’d better get to bed, because if I have another night like Friday I think my appearance will scare all the patients! ![]()
What was the best bit of your weekend? Monkey dancing.
Runners, have you tried compression gear? Thoughts?
What are you excited for this week? Working in the hopsital, and then I’ve got the world’s hilliest race on Saturday!!
Have a GREAT week friends! <3
Running Chat III: Common Running Myths
| October 23, 2011 | Posted by Sweet Tooth Runner under Running Talk |
fra
Happy Weekend guys! Hope you’re all having a good one so far! Mine has been craaaazy! I had an awesome party last night, and ended up crashing on my friend’s sofa until this morning…in a monkey oneise of course hehe! Anyway, I’ll catch y’all up on everything tomorrow, but in the meantime, here’s this weeks Running Chat Sat(urday)!
fra
Common running myths
raf
1. Running ruins your knees. Wrong. I’m sure many runners can relate to being told this by someone the minute you tell them you run. At least, I sure get told it a lot! There has NEVER been a well-designed study that proves this, and in fact many studies have proven that running actually strengthens your bones and joints.
gra
2. Running on a treadmill isn’t as effective as running outside. Wrong. Well obviously this COULD be true if you leave your treadmill on 0% incline and plug along slowly, but treadmills can give you just as good, or even BETTER workouts that running outside! Putting up the incline makes a huge difference, and is especially useful hillwork for people who live in flatter areas.
grea
3. Static stretch before you run to avoid injury. Wrong. Stretching cold muscles can cause you to pull a muscle. The optimal pre-run routine is a short warm-up followed by dynamic stretching. Save the static stretches till afterwards!![]()

4. Higher mileage is always better than lower mileage. Wrong. In some cases and conditions, yes this is true, but many sports scientists believe and have shown through studies that different people have different ‘mileage limits’. So while some people may be able to happily run 70+ mile weeks, others may have to stick to lower mileage to avoid injury. Also, studies have shown that running close to 70 mile weeks reaps the best rewards running-wise, but more than that isn’t always better, and is often detrimental.
The book Run Less, Run Faster has become very popular recently, and shows how you can run faster and stronger on lower mileage, by focusing on quality miles over quantity, and subbing in cross training. I read the book and was pretty impressed!![]()

5. Running/exercising on an empty stomach burns more fat. Wrong. This is the myth that probably annoys me the most! The theory behind this myth is that, because of the lack of glycogen, your body turns to fat as the primary energy source. However, muscle is more energy dense, so more often than not that becomes the source of energy, especially if your workout is longer than 20 minutes. Also, eating first means you kick-start your metabolism earlier, it regulates your blood sugar levels, and also you have more energy so you get more out of your workout, and therefore burn MORE calories! I know some people have their own reasons for working out on an empty stomch, but I’m just saying don’t go hungry just because you think you’re burning more fat!
I know for sure that a good breakfast makes me run better ![]()
Banana oatbran pudding with blueberries and almond butter.

That’s all for today! I’ll be back soon with life updates! ![]()

Have you heard any of these myths before, or do you have any other running myths to share? There’s lots of myths surrounding running and strength training, but I’ll save that for another post!
When Cold, Eat Ice Cream
| October 20, 2011 | Posted by Sweet Tooth Runner under Uncategorized |
Firstly I just want to thank you all SO MUCH for the responses I got to yesterday’s post! Although I haven’t yet had a chance to respond to all the comments, emails, etc., I have read them all and will respond to them all as soon as I can! Words can’t describe how much it means, to me, so thank you <3
It has been FREEZING here in London-town today! Ok, when I say freezing I am just exaggerating as usual, but it HAS been very cold, and in my defence I really feel the cold… I think it is even colder in my house than outside though, because the heating is broken. Great. So I have been living in leggings and warm socks.![]()
I’m pretty sure that is a serious fashion faux-pas. But hey, you can’t go wrong with those socks ![]()
The only thing that got me out of my warm, cosy bed into the deep freeze that was my room was knowing that my current favourite breakfast was just ten minutes away…
Pumpkin Bread in a Bowl, topped with crunchy PB and warmed up in the microwave. If you make this, use sultana bran cereal and thank me later ![]()
I have been all about the warm foods now! Bye bye salads, hello soup and pizza tortillas…
My current favourite snack!
And nothing beats warm, freshly baked muffins ![]()
These are Nicky’s Dark Chocolate Pudding Peanut Flour muffins. I am in love. With both her AND the muffins ![]()
For my running workout in the evening, I knew it was finally time to put away the tempo shorts. Yes, I did shed a few tears. I tried running in them on Tuesday but my legs went completely numb for the entire workout…so running tights it was today!
Looking cool as always
I took off my scarf and hoody to run, and I was still FREEZING! I guess that spurred me on to go faster…
4 miles of approx 800m-1000m intervals+jog recoveries, and 2 miles warm-up and cool-down. I hit that sub-5 pace interval on the last repeat- I didn’t think I’d be able to do it but I pushed and focused and did it!!
I got given chocolate at the end by the coach for being the most improved wahoo!
Well scrap what I said about eating only warm foods, because ice cream can and should be eaten all year round.

One serving wasn’t great recovery food…only 0.2g protein and not very carby, so I took care of that by having about a thousand servings. Right there is why I should totally become a sports nutritionist ![]()
Do you prefer hot weather or cold weather? I am a hot weather person all the way. Although I run better when it’s cold…probably because my body is trying to run to Florida or something.
What are your ultimate cold weather foods? Hot oatmeal and freshly baked muffins. Ok, so I have those all year round anyway! ![]()
What job are you good at, or what job WOULD you be good at? I would be the best peanut butter taster in the world.
Have a great day friends! <3
Journey to Health II: Depression
| October 19, 2011 | Posted by Sweet Tooth Runner under Deep Stuff, Journey to Health |
Thanks friends for all the amazing feedback on my post about fuelling running on a vegan diet! I loved reading your comments and thoughts on it! And just an advance warning: this post is a serious one! So if you want the usual light-hearted daily shenanigans, I won’t mind if you skip this post!
Anyway, two weeks ago I posted my first Journey To Health post (about my weight gain and loss) and got so many awesome responses! I was nervous about posting it, but the feedback definitely confirmed that I am doing the right thing by talking about this stuff.
Now this post is even harder, because this is something I struggled with alone (excluding help from doctors, etc.), and I have never spoken to anyone I know about this before. However I have wanted to post about this for a long time, and have been battling over whether to do it or not, but I feel now is the right time, because I am passionate that this should not be the almost ‘taboo’ topic that it is today!
*Disclaimer*: This is a post detailing my own experiences with depression. I am not qualified to give advice about this.
There are SO many misconceptions surrounding depression. It is a REAL illness with real symptoms (it’s to do with hormonal changes in the brain I think…), and it’s not something you can just “snap out of”. When people talk about depression or about feeling depressed, it can mean any number of things, but there is a huge difference between occasionally feeling ‘down’ to having clinical depression. It also can affect anyone of any age, from children to the elderly.
So how, why, and when? About two years ago, I became clinically depressed. Honestly, I don’t remember exactly what happened- a lot of my memories from that time are very hazy, which apparently is common with periods of depression. As far as I can remember, there wasn’t an exact ‘trigger’, simply a build up of things, including low self-esteem, struggling with eating issues, difficulty with family relationships, and the death of a loved one.

These three features definitely were features in my depression. The doctor asked me to write down some stuff in a journal about my feelings, and below are some quotes from it, and the depression symptoms that go with it. (Please note that I was only 15…apparently I couldn’t write in full sentences then!
)
- Feeling unlovable: “Why would anyone love fat, ugly me? Not even God, who supposedly loves everyone, could love someone like me. I am ugly inside and out.”
- Feeling worthless: “I am a failure. Academically, musically, and all round.”
- Relationships: “Momma thinks I’m fat. She said so, and laughed when someone called me slim. She’s right.”
- Feelings: {This one isn’t really appropriate to share, but basically I felt that life was no longer worth living.}
- Physical symptoms: “I have no energy. I am so tired and I want to sleep, but I just can’t if that makes any sense…and I am hungry all the time and bingeing.”
So why most people didn’t notice I had depression? Well for the most part I tried to keep acting as normal as possible, but a lot of people did realise there was SOMETHING up. I was a lot less outgoing, talked less to everyone, and generally became more introverted, which is the opposite to my personality normally. Every day I would come home from school, lock myself in the bathroom, and sob, simply because I was struggling just to get through the day. I struggled with suicidal thoughts, and I even resorted to self-injury as a coping mechanism.
This was a photo of me taken during that time. I always wore long sleeves to cover the scars. And that’s not quite being my normal self is it?
I didn’t feel like myself at all. I didn’t FEEL. It felt like the ‘me’ part of me had vanished, and all that remained was emptiness.
It was without a doubt the worst time of my life, and although recovering from it was a very slow process, with help I overcame the depression, and I will talk more about that next week!
Comments? Thoughts? I love reading your responses! ![]()
Love you all! <3
P.S. I am ALWAYS here if anyone needs to talk or ask anything! You can email me at sweet_tooth_runner@hotmail.co.uk or Formspring me anytime.
WIAW: Fuelling a Vegan Athlete
| October 18, 2011 | Posted by Sweet Tooth Runner under What I...Wednesday |
Happy WIAW, thanks to the lovely Jenn!

The most common response I get from people upon hearing that not only I am I a vegan, but an athlete too, is one of shock and incredulity. I totally understand, because I remember thinking “what on earth do they EAT?!” when I first heard about veganism as a kid. When my running coach found out, he was actually worried. He is quite old-fashioned and “doesn’t understand this no-meat trend” (his words, not mine!), and asked me how can I fuel myself properly. Well let me show you! I have never had a problem, and always have TONS of energy! ![]()
Today I had the best breakfast I have had in a long time. I can tell you now that I will have it tomorrow again for sure, and probably the day after that too! It was CCK’s Pumpkin Bread in a Bowl (photo courtesy of Chocolate Covered Katie- I blurred mine!)
Only I had mine topped with crunchy peanut butter (obviously!). I also used sultana bran cereal, which made it even MORE amazing!! LOVED IT!! ![]()
Mid-morning, I had a PB&J Larabar.
I wasn’t a huge fan of this flavour actually, which was weird because the PB&J combo is my favourite!!
Lunch. Was. Amazing. Usually, lunch is my least favourite meal of the day (breakfast is numero uno of course!) but today it was awesome!!
Two grilled WW wraps, filled with refried black beans + vegan cheese, plus broccoli on the side. I LOVE refried beans! I happily eat them straight from the can ![]()
Followed by an apple dipped in The Best Nut Butter In The World:
Afternoon snack/pre-run fuel was a toasted banana-honey-PB sandwich:![]()
Post-run, I had my usual chocolate soy milk (unpictured), and then dinner followed soon after:
Wholewheat giant couscous (love this stuff!), haricot beans in tomato-nooch sauce, and more broccoli! I don’t think I’ve quite conveyed enough my broccoli addiction on this blog…especially garlic-roasted…mmmm… ![]()
And of course, the BEST bit- dessert! ![]()
Katie’s Chocolate Bar Pie is definitely one of my all-time top desserts! So rich and chocolately…I love it! With vanilla Freedom ‘ice cream’ on the side:
Love the taste, don’t love the price haha! I am campaigning for them to start selling a PB flavour ![]()
I find that is is perfectly possible, and easy (for me at least!) to fuel an athletic lifestyle on a vegan diet. It fuels me well for my workouts:
Aaah hills…such a love/hate relationship there!
I’ve had tough running workouts two days running, so I think I’ll take the day off tomorrow, or at least have an easy day! Getting FOCUSED for some tough races coming up, including National XC Relays…bring it on I say!! ![]()
What was the best thing you ate today? Chocolate Bar Pie and ice cream for sure!
What was your last workout? Hill sprints. My quads and hamstrings are dead.
Do you follow a “special diet” (sorry, I hate that phrase!), or have you ever tried one out? Does it work well for you? I’ve been a vegetarian since I was about 8, and a vegan now for over a year, and I’ve always felt great!
Enjoy your day! <3
Dreaming Big
| October 18, 2011 | Posted by Sweet Tooth Runner under Uncategorized |
Good morning friends!! Hope you all had a good start to the week!
I’m just gonna get this off my chest now. I had a pumpkin-raisin themed breakfast AGAIN!
I am in love. Pumpkin-raisin oatmeal with crunchy PB ![]()
I had an amazing run today!
Plus 3 miles of warm-up/cool-down and drills.
The workout was done on the grassy banks round the back of the track, and it was WINDY up there!! I thought I was going to be blown off a few times haha!
It was a really tough workout (not helped by the fact that I was doing it alone today- doing it in a team makes a BIG difference), and I wanted to just give up on numerous occasions. At the end though, my coach said something that made it all more than worth it:
“You have made such huge improvements in the past month you’ve been training. You are no longer a runner, but an athlete.” AND he said if I continue training as well as I am, I am in with a good chance of not only running well at regionals, but making the regional TEAM!
(That’s sort of the equivalent of a State team I guess…?)
My legs were totally dead though by the end. I passed out on the couch for a bit when I got home…![]()
…and then dragged myself into an ice bath.

I love ice baths…! ![]()
I knew I had to try and recover as best I can because I have another workout tomorrow(!), and we are tackling HILLS! One of my favourite workouts! Apparently our next two races are SERIOUSLY hilly. Like this kind of hilly:
Ok, so that’s just a random Google Imaged hill, but people keep telling me it’s like 90 degree slopes that you have to crawl up. I’m 99.9% sure they’re joking about that bit though…or at least, I hope they are! ![]()
Whenever my coach starts talking about the things I ‘can’ acheive, part of me freaks out a bit. By him putting it out there, I know that I have the potential to achieve these things, but I am scared of FAILING.
But I shouldn’t be afraid of admitting my goals, whether to myself or to others. I know I am dreaming big this year, but, as the love of my life so eloquently puts it…
I love you Disney ![]()
Share with me a dream YOU have! To qualify for Nationals, to run well at regionals, and make the regional team!
Have you ever had an ice bath? Love or hate? I actually think now that hot/ice-cold showers work better for me! So I might sub those for ice baths in future. I don’t love HAVING them, but I love the effect!!
Are you a hill fan? Yes! I love powering up them- makes me feel STRONG!
Have an amazing day! <3
With a Side of Cheese Please
| October 17, 2011 | Posted by Sweet Tooth Runner under Uncategorized |
Hey friends! Have you had a good weekend? Mine has been great! I actually spent most of today setting up a sort-of home gym!

Urgh I hate flash photography!! BLECH!
We now have a spare room, so I’ve taken it over hehe! The floor has become a permanent home for my yoga mat (which I have been slacking on recently…gotta get back to it!)
An d now I’ve got weights in there too, so I just want to add a medicine ball, a Swiss ball and a foam roller. And a treadmill when I win the lottery.
I love weekend breakfasts!! Much as I adore my oatmeal, it’s so good to have more time to make other stuff at the weekend! And I have definitely been sucked back into the pumpkin obsession. Breakfast on Saturday and Sunday was pumpkin-raisin themed!![]()
Pumpkin-raisin pizzert! In the interests of full disclosure, I did not just have a small slice, I had the whole pizzert drizzled with PB, as usual ![]()
And, quite obviously, it was had in PANCAKE form this morning! ![]()
I haven’t QUITE perfected the recipe yet, but as soon as I do, I’ll let you know! They were so yummy, especially when covered in maple syrup…
My Saturday consisted of six hours of rehearsals and then a concert! I am one cool chica I know
I hate my ‘playing face’. Probably the only time I ever look serious haha!
Some friends and I thought it would be a good idea to order in pizza. Yup, straight into a church…got some weird looks for that!
The delivery guy looked something like this:
In our defence, we were very hungry…
My conversation with the Pizza People went something like this:
Me: I would like a margherita pizza please. Without cheese, with extra veggies. And a treadmill too if possible.
Pizza People: Without cheese? So, NO CHEESE?! What about light cheese?”
Me: “Nada, thank you. I am a vegan, so unless you have some Tofutti back there in the Pizza Hut kitchens, I’m good without.”
Pizza People: “What about some cheese on the side?”
Seriously, cheese on the SIDE? What, were they going to put a ball of mozzeralla on the side of my pizza?
![]()
They didn’t in the end. Shame really.
About to have a quick late-night munchie now…
PB&J rice cake sandwich (x2)
…and then off to bed! I am totally failing in my attempts to get more sleep. I am writing this at 12.30am…oh dear! ![]()
Do you ever have problems with ordering food? People never understand my weird demands.
Do you have a ‘home gym’? I’d love to have a PROPER one, with a treadmill and stuff! That would be amazing!
What is one of your current aims? TO GET MORE SLEEP!!
Hope you all have an amazing week! <3
Life Updates
| October 13, 2011 | Posted by Sweet Tooth Runner under Uncategorized |
Update 1:
I am officially so confused!! Basically, yesterday someone left a comment for me on Formspring to let me know they had found a website with my race result from Saturday, and it’s COMPLETELY different from what I had heard! Time, placing, EVERYTHING was different!! Has anyone ever had this with races before with different sets of results? I’m going to ask my coach when I see him next week (he wasn’t at practice today), but I don’t understand at all!! It really upset me at first, cos these results are much worse!! But I’ll wait to see what Coach says about it all
(P.S. If the person who Formspringed me reading this, thank you for letting me know!)
All I know is that next race (two weeks on Saturday) I will be wearing Garmy so there will be no confusion! ![]()
![]()
Looking good post-run ![]()
Update 2:
I went back to see the sports doctor about my tibial bone stress.
He said that it is healing, and that I definitely should not do any more than I am doing (I’m only running twice a week during team training) and he said that I should not really be racing. I explained to him that if possible I need to run the next few races to be in with a chance of qualifying for Nationals and stuff, so he said that it should be fine as long as I treat them more like tempo runs than actual races, and hopefully it should be totally healed within the next two months! I’ll take it! ![]()
Now onto slightly more trivial updates…
Update 3:
I have been LOVING autumnal (yes ‘autumn’ not ‘fall’ cos I’m a Brit thank you anonymous commenter!
) oatmeal lately…
Apple-cinnamon oatmeal, with cashew butter stirred in ![]()
Caramel-Pumpkin oatmeal! Pumpkin oatmeal with caramel pudding and a pumpkin scuffin. Baked goods as an oatmeal topping is the best thing ever!!
The scuffins by the way are from Oh She Glows (recipe found here), and I make a few minor changes (e.g. no chia seeds) but they are my all-time FAVOURITE pumpkin recipe, and one of my general favourites too!!
Update 4:
I am having the best time training with my team! I’m so glad that for the time being at least, I can still run with them twice a week! And NEWS FLASH I am no longer the slowest person yaay!
3 miles of warm-up/cooldown+drills, and then repeats and stuff! I was pretty frustrated by my 5.01 min/mile split! I was trying so hard to break 5 min/mile!!
NEXT TIME I will for sure!
I refuelled afterwards by crumbling a pumpkin scuffin (obsessed!) into a half empty soy yoghurt pot:

Keeping it cool and classy as always ![]()
Update 5:
I have early morning spin class tomorrow, with my fave instructor (super-hardcore ex-military, ultra-marathoner man- he ‘mentions’ that every time haha!). And if I’m going to be able to crawl out of bed at some crazy hour, I need to get some sleep! I am NOT a super-early morning person normally! ![]()
So I’m off to get some shut-eye! And yes I will be wearing my workout clothes to bed…always classy ![]()
Help me out here runners: have you ever had any confusion over race times? I’ve never had this before! Obviously your Garmin always says something different to the actual results, but I’ve never seen two completely different sets of official results before!
What is one thing you are aiming for in your next few workouts/runs? To break the 5 min/mile in my next set of repeats! Although next session is hills…hmmm! ![]()
How much sleep do you get on average? Ok, I’ll admit it now…currently about 6 hours. I know I know, it’s bad!! I’m working on it haha!
Have a great end to the week friends! <3
What I Ate (and worked) Wednesday!
| October 12, 2011 | Posted by Sweet Tooth Runner under What I...Wednesday |
It’s that time of week again! WIAW time!!

What I Ate
Today I thought I’d share my meals of the day! I tend to show breakfasts, snacks and desserts because I love them most, so I thought I’d change things up a bit…
I started my day with my all-time FAVOURITE breakfast!
Oatmeal in a totally-not-very-empty peanut butter jar!! So sad to see my fave PB go, but it went out with a bang for sure!
Topped with granola of course ![]()
I love OIAJ because you get PB with EVERY SPOONFUL and it is heaven!!
Broccoli, cucumber, tomato, romaine, and this amazing dip from WF:
I love this dip! I ended up putting about half of it on my salad ![]()
Along with the salad, I had a PB&J and my fave bar:
This flavour is definitely one of my favourites! (And Brit friends they are now selling multipacks of this flavour in Tescos, so run there now and stock up!!)
Dinner was post-training. I get back from my team training at about 8.30pm, so I always try to make myself a quick dinner, and one that is good for recovery! Today’s took all of ten minutes to throw together:
The classic: jacket potato with beans and broccoli on the side. Did you know Runner’s World listed this as the best recovery meal? I know people are all about the sweet taters (me included!), but regular potatoes are actually better for post-exercise recovery ![]()
No matter what Runner’s World says though, my optimal recovery foods are these two:
Mental recovery is just as important as physical in my book ![]()
What I Worked
Today’s run was awesome! We hit the roads (I checked first and was very cautious but had no pain!) and had such a great session! It was so hard though!
Plus 2.5 miles of warm-up/cool down and drills. By the last interval I felt SO nauseous (darn lactic acid!) but that was nothing some chocolate milk afterwards couldn’t cure! ![]()

Is there ANYTHING chocolate can’t cure?!
Best thing you’ve eaten recently? Definitely OIAJ!
What was your last workout? I love reading about other people’s workouts!
What are your best ‘mental’ recovery foods? Chocolate and PB. All baked goods. Pudding oatmeal…mmm… ![]()
HUGS and love! <3
