My back hurts.

Right at this second I am CRANKY because I haven’t run today. On Friday, I was lifting some heavy boxes and I hurt my back. I took a day or two off because of it (moving hurt a lot!), but it felt better so I went back to a track session yesterday. NOT A GOOD MOVE. It was such a great run, because it was a good session (just me and my friend Sonia, who is a 400m/800m distance star, so her speediness really challenges me!!) and it rained, which I love! I got soaked:

why is this photo so yellow?! totally unedited!! must just my awesome photography skills then…

Workout: 1.5 miles warmup, two sets of 600m, 500m, 400m, 300m at target paces (1.58, 1.30, 70, 50), then 2 miles cooldown in the park. This kinda stuff (short distances with a fast middle-distance running partner!) is wayyy out of my comfort zone, but I’m making good progress, so I’m happy! :) This is my last full week of track work and racing before base-building totally takes over, so I’m making the most of it!

As much as I loved the run, my back certainly didn’t and it feels even worse today! I’m just keeping my fingers crossed that another day of rest, getting lots of sleep and eating lots of (vegan) ice-cream straight from the tub will heal it. Fool-proof plan ;)

I’ve been keeping VERY busy on the music front. Since Saturday, I have had three concerts, four quartet jobs, one recording session, and countless hours of rehearsals.

getting ready for a quartet job is a serious business ;)

Today’s job was a Summer Ball, and the venue was so beautiful…

…and as always, freeeeee drinks at the bar for us musicians! I don’t drink alcohol, but Appletiser is the new love of my life:)

All my rehearsals are fuelled by cookies. For anyone who doesn’t know, bourbon biscuits are vegan(!!), and we always have those and other cookies at every rehearsal to get us through the long hours. I usually demolish about half the packet. It’s a talent of mine.

It’s also time for me to buy some new running shoes, as mine have waaaay too many miles on them! I love my current training shoe, the Saucony Kinvara, but which one to get?! What do you think?

The purple is the Kinvara 2, which I am more tempted by because it is cheaper, and the bottom is the Kinvara 3 (i.e. the latest version) but I think I like the colour more…this is obviously an important life-changing decision which I am taking very seriously, because I LOVE running shoes…

Tomorrow I am travelling up north for a music competition, which means a SUPER EARLY run. Not my thing. So I’d better hit the sack now if there’s any chance of that happening! :P

Tell me about your last run/workout! I genuinely love reading about other people’s runs/workouts, so please tell me about yours!

What is are your favourite running conditions? Rainy and about 10C with a slight breeze. I put a lot of thought into that;)

Are you loyal to a certain shoe or brand? Does shoe colour matter to you? This will be my third pair of Saucony Kinvaras, and all my other current shoes are Saucony! p.s. I am not associated with Saucony in any way, so I’m not biased! And yes, trivial as it is, colour of running shoes matters quite a lot to me! I love bright colours, and shoes that stand out!

Have an amazing day!! <3

P.S. My email got hacked today, so apologies to anyone who got a weird email from me!

  1. Aww I hope your back feels better! If I were you I’d go with the cheaper shoe, because then when you get your next pair you can get the newer edition. I used to always wear Nikes but the last few pairs I’ve had were Brooks and Saucony. I think I prefer Saucony because they’re lightweight. My last run was hills on Sunday night and I’m about to leave for a team practice! I love running with no wind on a cool day (45-65 degrees F) and kind of overcast, not sunny.

  2. I hope you feel better soon! Personally, I would get the purple shoes, because you already have blue shoes but no purple!! The purple and green would make it a full on rainbow haha. My last run was in the evening, just before sunset, but i don’t make it running that often. I love it when I get to it, but unless I go in the evening/early morning, its usually way too hot here (like, 90 on a cool day).
My ideal running conditions are in the morning, just before dawn (in the summer obvs), its so peaceful, the light is changing and birds are sining, everything feels fresh and alive, it makes me feel so greatful for life:)

  3. I have the purple Saucony Kinvara 2! I love them. When I need new ones though, I’m going to get the Kinvara 3.

My last workout was this morning – just an easy 5 miles around my sister’s house. I’m visiting my sister and her husband this week to run the Peachtree Road Race in their city. It’s the largest 10K race in America (60,000 people) and it’s SO much fun :D

  4. You are the energizing bunny…you never stop. Anyways-I actually pulled my back muscle in the fall last year lifting something so I know 100% how you feel. It took about a week to feel perfect again but it gets better and it’s def better then a running injury!

  6. Emma, you have to have the purple ones!

I love running in the rain too. Get better ASAP so you can get out for the next rainy day x

  7. I don’t mind the rain if it is light rain, but not heavy stuff- I don’t like soggy socks! I have always had Nike shoes as I find them comfy, but this time I got some Mizuno ones and they have been really good too.

  8. I tried being vegan and it lasted about 2 weeks. I swear I lived off bourbons.

  9. I think you need both shoes :)
hehe! you are such a Saucony girl…you need to be sponsored!
I hope your back is feeling 100% better today, I think your probably strained the muscles…they should bounce back quickly, and if they don’t feel better before a run Cross-Train! :)
I hope you’ve been having a great week!
    xoxo!

  11. Favourite running conditions- overcast (or not too strong sun), 17-22 degrees celcius, low humidity with a tail wind ;) I can be specific too!! If only we could order weather!

Last workout-am=90min easy run pm= 3x600m, 5x300m, 6x200m, 7x100m (at the race pace of the next distance up e.g. 600 run at 800m race pace etc.) with 60-90 secs rest between each. Was almost the weather conditions I described above too!:)

I love appletiser! It always made me feel like an adult when I would drink it as a kid ;) You guys are doing so well with your music!! Hope you’re enjoying it (and the money!!)

Speaking of money..I would probably go with the older shoes just because I’m cheap, but I agree that the new ones have a better colour. Oh the tough decisions we have to make (#firstworldproblems);) Hope you’re having a great week!

  12. I’d go with the cheap shoes – but that’s just me! I hate spending a lot of money unnecessarily!

I am not loyal to a certain brand of shoe. My last run was indoors at my gym on a treadmill. I am a newbie to running (noob!) and still trying to not absolutely hate it so much. I’m working on the Couch to 5K program and my first 5K run is this Sunday. It will probably be more of a walk than a run, but to keep myself motivated, I signed up for another one in September!!!! So maybe in a few months I’ll be able to do more running than walking. I’m going to subscribe to your blog for running motivation and inspiration!!

  13. Love those shoes, I like both of them to be honest. I would love to wear the kinvaras, but I need a more supportive shoe sadly :( I did a livefit weights workout and treadmill sprints at 6am this morning, I was barely awake enough to stay on the treadmill ha! I like cool and cloudy to run in, once the sun comes out, I’m done for, I just can’t cope in it at all! I am pretty loyal to my asics, I haven’t had too much trouble or injury problems, so I stick with them!

  14. Ugh! Sorry about your back. I’m sure it will ease up with time. I too get super cranky when I can’t work out. My most notable workout this week was a 16 mile run on July 4th. I did it in honor of America (Independence Day) and because the gym was closed. It was a solid, comfortable run. I went out at 8 am. It was hot…like 86° when I started. I finished around 10:20, and it was about 95°. Fortunately, there was a breeze and I ran along the coast. It was a good run, all around. I am obsessed with running shoes. I tried so hard to find a good use for my old pairs that I didn’t want to throw away. So far, I’ve got nothing other than donating them. I’m loyal to Asics, and I just got a new pair of obnoxiously hot pink Asics GEL-Nimbus 14s. But I like your 2 top choices of the Saucony Kinvara’s–great shoes. Personally I LOVE the bottom pair (turquoise/orange) but I also like darker shoes because they don’t get dirty as easily. I think either pair is a winner! I would be debating between those 2 as well. =)

  15. I’d go for the purple ones – but thats just because their purple :p My wardrobe is mainly purple (currently wearing a purple & white checked shirt), i have a purple handbag, purple glasses, purple shoes – but i couldn’t get my new car in purple :( (not at a budget i could afford at least!)

My last workout & first class in 4 weeks was 8.15am yesterday (saturday) – an X-biking class for 45 minutes with the head instructor which left me looking like i just got out the shower & raised my heart rate to a peak of 180 :) But didn’t aggravate my adductor which although healed is now very tight.

My shoes are Asics, when buying a pair for my first marathon i tried on loads & my feet found those the comfiest, so i bought a 2nd pair a year later & i’m about due another pair i think! i rarely by new clothes or shoes, i generally wear things until i need to get new stuff due to holes or faded colour etc.

Hope the ice cream worked its magic on your back

    xx

  16. HI EMMA GUESS WHO IT IS
i’m kind of offended you wrote about bourbons and didn’t mention me….

    to answer your questions:
    1. my last workout was running from the rain at the station i almost fell off the platform and my glasses got really wet :(
    2. my fav running conditions are when its not RAINING so i don’t have to run
    3. i think you should get rainbow running shoes
    xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx

  17. Emma Emma Emma

  18. Hey I just came across your blog and I really love it!! Great running!!! I’m 17 and a wanna-be runner, and I post about it as much as I can on my blog http://www.runforyourlifefitness.blogspot.com! :)
My workout this AM was about a 3 mile run, it was about 80F out so that wasn’t pleasant but it was great! I was so happy about how running even improved my mood! lol!
As far as running shoes go, I love Brooks!! I have the Adrenaline GTS11 which is great for over-pronators like me.
Keep up the great blogging!!! :)

  19. I hope you feel better soon! Maybe you just need the rest? A week of just chillin’ and you’ll probably be back to new :) Also, you are STUNNING and look so professional with your violin (viola? I can never tell the difference unless they’re side-by-side)! Ice cream for the win!

And, oh, I can’t remember the last time I had a workout, so there’s not much to say :P
