I am FREE!

Finally, after exams every weekday for a fortnight, and after a month of living in the library…

“THIS IS SO CONFUSING”

…I am finally FREE! All my exams are done, and it feels good to be out in the sunshine relaxing, and to finally have clean hair again ;)

The weather here has been so hot and sunny recently, but it sure made my decision to run late morning a very bad idea!! I headed to the trails for my easy run to try and avoid the heat. but I was still boiling! Six hot miles later I called it quits and jumped straight into a cold shower.

This is actually my first summer of proper running! This time last year I was injured with bad shin splints, so spent most of the summer not running, or making my comeback. This is my excuse as to why I am not so great with running in the heat ;)

I also had a TOUGH workout in the muggy heat on Thursday evening. I hadn’t done a workout in a couple of weeks because of the exams, so this tough session on slow legs was interesting ;) It was 400’s at 800m pace (2.24 pace = 72 sec 400s) and then 30s rest before a 200m at the same pace. And then that repeated a lot of times. My legs sure met the lactic yesterday!! As usual recently I was doing the workout with the middle-distance girls to “challenge me”. I feel SO slow when I train with them haha! It was tough, and I had to keep reminding myself of the quote that’s written above our track door:

Running is a big question mark that’s there each and every day. It asks you, ‘Are you going to be a wimp or are you going to be strong today? ~ Peter Maher

Love that quote. And I chose STRONG.

Apart from my run, I spent most of my day today lying on the couch watching TV doing absolutely nothing, and it was BLISS :) I caught up on everything I’ve recorded in the last four weeks, including the coverage of the Great Manchester Run. Can we just talk about how AMAZING and inspirational Haile Gebrselassie is for a sec?

I LOVEthat man. He has the sweetest personality too!!

I am writing this post whilst demolishing my third bowl of (non-dairy) ice cream. I am obsessed. As soon as the sun comes out, I go crazy with the ice cream.

ice-cream

vanilla+chocolate=SO GOOD

ALSO I am dropping down in distance to  race my first 1500m on Monday night! My coach thinks it will be a good test of my (non-existent) speed, so it will be interesting for sure ;)

IMG_1236

What is the shortest distance you’ve ever raced? As of Monday, it will be 1500m! I love 5ks and 10ks the most I think :)

Running in the heat or in the cold? Cold I think, because I run faster! In the eat I run slower usually haha!

Are you an ice cream fan? What’s your favourite flavour? Chocolate, obviously! I hope someone starts selling cookie dough vegan ice cream…that would make me the happiest girl ever!!

Have an amazing weekend friends!! <3

  1. Yay! Glad you’re back! (: The heat here is unbearable – 32C + humidity leaves me gasping for air and in no mood to run (outside) :P

  2. Ahh you’re so lucky you’re done! I still have three more weeks of studying in front of me *sigh* I definitely feel your pain with the heat! I used to live in Australia so temps would get up to 45 degress celcius – its killer. The best way to escape the heat? Air conditioner + lots of chocolate ice cream ;)

  3. Congrats on being done with exams!! I still need to catch up on all the tv shows I recorded during my exams. I think I might do that this weekend!
I definitely like running in the cold better (but not super windy!) and I LOVE ice cream too!

  5. Congratulations on finishing your exams! Also, that’s so fast for 400 repeats. :) I used to run the 400m in like, middle school. Nowadays I’m a 2 miler (3200 m). Good luck in your race! I definitely prefer the cold to the heat, at least as far as running. There’s nothing better than getting up on a winter day, putting on thermal tights and earmuffs, and going running when everybody else thinks it’s “too cold” to go out. Chocolate Reese’s Peanut Butter cup ice cream is amazing! Also, nutella gelato! So good. :)

    • thanks Maria!! wow that’s quite a move up in distance! :P and too right about winter running! I LOVE running all wrapped up in the snow and stuff! and WHAT Reese’s PB cup ice-cream exists?! that sounds like HEAVEN :)

  6. I don’t think I’ve ever commented n your blog, but you are too funny! I enjoy reading your posts from time to time. I almost ran in college…but my desire to do the sorority thing won me over, though I still ran 6 to 10 miles a day on my own because I loved it. I totally understand the muggy, humid, hot weather! I’m from Charleston, SC and our summers are brutal. In high school, our early season XC races were miserable. But I can honestly say, if you can run in the hottest, stickiest conditions, you can do anything! My ideal running temps are between 55°-65°F. Keep up the hard work! I don’t follow regularly so I don’t know if you’ve mentioned this, but are you going to see any of the London Olympics track events? I would kill for that opportunity! Run on, my friend! =)

    • haha thanks Mary!! :) wow okay I should probably stop complaining about running in our heat, because compared to SC I bet it’s nothing! :P

yes, I got a free ticket to see that athletics at the Olympics from a race I did last month! I am SO excited for it!! :)

      happy running! <3

  7. Congrats on finishing your exams!! :) That second picture of you is stunning. I’m in London too and the heat is amaaaaaaazzzing but pretty humid for running!! Not gonna compain! ;)

  8. Yay for having all your exams outta the way! Your recent workouts sound supa great! The homemade cookie dough ice cream link from andy’s comment looks deeelish, but next time you’re in the US: http://www.turtlemountain.com/products/soy-milk-ice-creams/pd-cookie-dough. I hope a UK distributor will have it soon, too!

  10. I have learnt never to go trail running in the summer.

I just got back from one this morning… with flies sticking to my chest.

  11. Ugh, I’m not doing well in the heat at all – and I know how much more humid/airless it is in London than ‘up North.’ I don’t know how you manage to run fast in it – I gave myself a mild case of dehydration and heat stroke trying to do tempos and that was at 5:30 in the morning when it should have been cooler (!)

I forgot about that Sweet Freedom ice cream – I was just moaning to myself that I can’t have any because all of the vegan ice creams I can buy up here are based on soy. Chocolate is nice, but coconut is my favourite ice cream flavour. Sadly no vegan option for that though, or for my ultimate ice cream, crappy soft-serve Mr Whippy!

I prefer cooler temps to run but NOT anywhere near freezing. My opinion of snow and ice is even lower than of heat and blazing sunshine. Which is why spring and autumn are my favourite running seasons.

Congrats on finally being free and good luck with the 1500m – I’ve never raced anything below a 5K (unless you count school sports day and my waddling 300m. Ha!)

    • I don’t know how YOU manage to run so fast in it! CONGRATS on your third super-speedy marathon in a month!! You are amazing!!

Sweet Freedom is SO good, but I hate how expensive it is!! If only they did a vegan Mr Whippy ;)

Thanks! I’ve never raced anything so short either, so I’m pretty nervous! CONGRATULATIONS again on your amazing marathon time, and I hope you’re well!! <3

  12. congrats on finishing exams :) Isn’t it just the best feeling ever?
I just ran 11.5 miles in 70+ degree weather – needless to say it was tough and soo uncomfortable. I much prefer 50 degree weather.

  13. I’m so excited to see a new blog post! Welcome back :D

Shortest distance I’ve raced was 800m. I’m REALLY slow though… my PR is like 3:16.

As for hot versus cold… I live in Georgia (USA) and during the summer months, it’s basically 100 degrees fahrenheit with 100% humidity every. single. day. So while I’m definitely used to the heat, I think I prefer the cold. If it’s cold, you can put on enough layers so that you’re warm (plus hat, gloves, scarf, etc). But if it’s hot… there’s only so many layers you can take off before you get down to skin. And even then it’s STILL too hot.

Love ice cream! :D My favorite flavor is probably vanilla… some say it’s too boring, but it’s so good!

  14. I ran in the cold for the first time ever this past winter and surprisingly enjoyed it! Of course I would prefer temps in the mid 50s/low 60s but life isn’t all rainbows and butterflies :) If I had to pick I would also choose cold weather…just as long as I’m perfectly insulated.

    Congrats on finishing your finals!!

  15. Congratulations on finishing those exams :)
I have only done 5k races- don’t think I would ever be fast enough for the short track distances. And I much prefer to be cool than warm- the heat just saps my energy.
Hmm, fave ice cream flavour would either be choc pb, or coconut. Yum

I hate to make you jealous but where I live So Coconut has a cookie dough vegan ice cream; sorry, hehe. but i’m sort of in love with it, so i’ll have to answer your question with that flavor too. I’m pumped for the summer too! It’s my first summer of serious running too! We will have to motivate each other(:
