WIAW: Crazy for Cake

HEY friends! It’s Wednesday, which means one thing…What I Ate Wednesday courtesy of Jenn @ Peas and Crayons!

It’s AMAZING how much WIAW has grown recently! At this moment, there are 165 other bloggers who have submitted their WIAW posts…and I’m betting there’ll be at least ten more by the time I post this! Major kudos to Jenn for this!!

Since this is a special WIAW ‘Love your veggies’ month, I should tell you that I really do love my veggies. My preferred (and recommended) method of getting in veg is in cake form:

This was my first EVER slice of carrot cake! I have been deprived my whole life!! It is my new favourite cake. And it totally counts as healthy because of the veggie thing Winking smile

It was from the wonderful Inspiral vegan cafe in London. They do THE BEST vegan cakes and desserts I have ever had! Seriously. They also do delicious mains:

(From right to left) Raw tart with cashew cheese and sundried tomatoes, quinoa, roasted root vegetables, and roasted greens.

I had a vegan choc chip cookie there too, because it was half price and calling my name…

IMG_0496

I also may have bought a brownie. In my defence, it was also half price Winking smile

They also had taster tables, and I may or may not have stood by them for five minutes munching away whilst pretending that I was mulling over the menu.

Kale chips and raw chocolate granola. Their deliciousness astounded me! I really wasn’t expecting them to taste that good!

I was in central London that day because I was playing in a concert with the London Philharmonic Orchestra in one of my favourite venues:

The Royal Festival Hall looks out over the Thames, which looked quite pretty in the early hours of the morning!

I was a bit too sleepy to appreciate it fully though. Before breakfast, my brain just doesn’t function. I ate it (two slices of homemade blueberry-banana bread with almond butter, fruit, and coffee) whilst walking across the bridge, which was surprisingly quiet!

It was a really great concert, and the auditorium was completely packed!

After I had finished and had hit up Inspiral for lunch, I headed to Whole Foods quickly, and then once more to Ms Cupcake. I blame her tweeting about having chocolate peanut butter cupcakes. Seriously, how could I resist that?!

IMG_0504

And somehow I ended up ordering a lemon-blueberry one too. Don’t ask me how that happened! Winking smile

I swear cupcakes make awesome running fuel, because I felt GREAT during yesterday’s workout!

(from my Dailymile account)

Apart from the fact that it was freakin’ FREEZING, it was one of the most enjoyable workouts I’ve had! I loved it! I’m really looking forward to my eight/nine mile trail tempo run on Saturday! Trails + tempo = my heaven!!

Oh, and I totally had the best pancakes EVER on Sunday! Recipe to come soon!

IMG_0460

Anyway, I’m off to have a quick late night snack before bed. My fruit (and cinnamon!) addiction continues…

How many portions of fruit and veg do you get a day? Usually around eight or nine portions. If we’re including in cake form, I’m guessing around fifty.

What kind of cake would you have right now? Carrot cake. It was so divine. I can’ t believe I’m saying that…usually I’m a chocolate cake girl through and through!

What are you looking forward to in the rest of this week? Saturday’s trail tempo run, Sunday’s pancakes, and seeing family at the weekend!

Have an amazing day! <3

  2. Tempo trail run sounds awesome fun!!!
And all those cakes look amazing… and that raw tart too. I love raw food at restaurants!
I think I’ve been on that bridge before… it looks familiar. Is it the one that Shakespeare theatre is at one end of??

  3. mmmmm now you have me wanting a huge slice of carrot cake!! ;)

i usually get about 8-9 servings of veggies a day, i’d say. although it’s probably more considering i think a normal salad is the size of the salad bowl you’d serve six with at a dinner party, heh.

    happy WIAW!!

  4. I cannot believe you’ve never had carrot cake before!! Oh my goodness- it’s my all time favorite! That restaurant looks sooo yummy. Especially the tart. Mmm…
I would guess that I average 6-8 servings of fruit/veggies every day. But, it could be more! I love them. <3

  7. 1) I eat veggies with all my meals, or fruit if I’m having a PB & banana wrap. I always consume the veggies first to fill me up. Each time I eat veggies I probably eat 3 portions so that adds up.

    2) I can never say no to… vanilla bean cake with some PB frosting or banana cake/bread. I’m not a fan of chocolate cake (too much) or carrot cake or coconut cake. Red velvet is okay

    3) Not sure. Rest!

  8. YOUR FIRST TIME TRYING CARROT CAKE??? Girl you need to make up for lost time ASAP :) ! It’s made the cut as one of my favorite cake flavors! A second favorite is funfetti with vanilla buttercream icing..delicious!

  9. well with my green smoothie i’m probably on 3 (if not more) already and it only just 8 am! still haven’t got portion control quite right so have just had 2 mugs :)

Cake is still on my scary list & only gets eat either at christmas because i treat myself to my Nan’s amazing Dundee cake (fruit cake) or i am eating it not to be rude when people have been very kind. but it won’t really help me lose the stone i gain due to 6 weeks of flu & its after affects ;)

rest of this week is boring. After my 13 mile long run last saturday, i think unless i want to break an ankle by running on snow & ice, i need to think up another idea around the treadmill (my latest blog post explains all on that) to replace my 10 mile long run. Any ideas?

  10. omigod – I can’t believe you hadn’t had carrot cake until now! It’s been my favorite cake since I first had it, and I think I was like 7 years old or something. Did it have good vegan cream cheese frosting? That’s a necessary part… haha.

  14. Inspiral is amazing! I went last time I was in London, so good! Amazing juices and smoothies, and yummy raw and vegan options :) I think I got 15 portions of fruit/veg in yesterday, and would say I average between 10-15 on any given day! I have my best friends coming to visit this weekend, so it’s going to be a packed weekend of partying, fingers crossed the snow doesn’t develop!

Plus way to go on the concert- I would be way too nervous with all those people.

I eat about 7 serves but I have to make an effort to fit them in sometimes. I should start doing smoothies and chuck em all in at once ;)

  17. oh my god, this post made me miss london so so much! seriously it could have been written from me. i used to go to the royal festival hall to see the london philharmonic orchestra quite often, i loved it! and inspiral- one of my all time favourite places in london! i spend so much time there, also bc my favourite yoga centre is nearby. their food is amazing!! i hope u stocked up on kale chips, i keep ordering them every other month- and i run out fairly quickly unfortunately! we should do a swap! ;)

  18. Oooh love your eats!! Embrace the cake (and the veggies that come with it)!! I don’t really know how many servings of fruits and veggies I get, because I usually eat twice as much as the standard serving size in one sitting! I’m probably up around 8 or 9 too. I could really go for some mocha caramel cake right now.. my best friend made that for me last week and it was soooo good!

  19. I’d have an extra gooey piece of chocolate cake with extra frosting! I’m not a carrot cake fan for some weird reason.

  20. Carrot cake is one of my favs. That and red velvet are tied for my top picks.

Way to go on the concert. I knew you were a musician, but I didn’t know you were such a superstar! :)

  21. Oh wow. That carrot cake looks amazing – I’ve only had one once before in my life but it didn’t have frosting. So obviously yours is better.

I go through phases with veggies, but anything above 8ish portions and my stomach is not happy with me. Sometimes I can’t get enough of them and others I just want to eat oats and nut butter and nothing else…I call those days ‘weekdays.’

You have too many talents, darn you. Can I have one of your spares ;)
