Canterbury Tales

 

Hey friends! Had a good start to the week? Your comments on yesterday’s post blew me away. Seriously. Thank you all so much for your continual support!

 

Since I didn’t finish recapping my weekend in my last post, I’ll just pick up where I left off!

 

After the race, we headed into the famous city of Canterbury. I’d never been before!

We walked around the town for a bit, admiring the cute cobbled streets and quaint shops.

I also found my heaven.

If it wasn’t so crazily expensive, I swear I would’ve bought half the store.

 

Sadly, we only had a short time to explore the beautiful city because I had to head back to London for a quartet job. Thankfully we managed to find the time to stop off on the journey home for a quick coffee. I was feeling the long day!

I just made it in the nick of time! That meant I only had a couple of minutes to get ready, so I was stuck with race hair and no shower. I don’t know why people pay me to do this stuff.

I even still had mud on my legs. Thick tights to the rescue!

 

On Sunday, my legs were not feeling up to a long run, so I had pancakes to make them feel better…

…and ran my long run today instead! It was definitely a good decision to listen to my body and put it off until today!

One of the best long runs I’ve had in a while! A confidence booster for sure!

 

I took an ice bath because I want to make sure my legs are totally recovered for tomorrow’s workout. It was painful. I thought adding bubbles might help make it easier.

Sadly, it did not. I have learned that for me, getting in slowly does not work. I tried that, and then ran around my house squealing for ten minutes with cold wet feet. So once I had recovered my resolve and remaining dignity, I decided to don some fluffy socks and just jump in.

Much better Smile I lie, it wasn’t any better really, but at least I was in! I took ice baths a couple of times in the summer, but I don’t remember them being this excruciating haha! I guess it’s the cold weather making it worse! But they are SO worth it, and I always notice the difference the next day!

 

Oh, and I spent the whole weekend glued to the Olympic Marathon Trials updates! What an amazing race!

I was literally refreshing my Twitter feed every few seconds to catch the last minutes of the race on my journey home on Saturday! It’s going to be an amazing Olympic marathon, that’s for sure!

 

What was the best part of your weekend?

 

Have you ever taken an ice bath? I read today in Running Fitness magazine that Jenny Meadows (GB’s #1 middle distance runner) takes one every day! She is my hero for that.

 

Did you catch the Olympic Trials? What do you think of the outcome? I am just gutted for Amy and Dathan!! But deserving winners all round.

    I had a really hard time getting into ice baths too, until I started taking them this way:

    Fill the tub up with water, sit down, and THEN add the ice. So much better and and less painful!

  3. Omg I this makes me want to come to Europe SOO bad!! Canterbury looks so quaint and cute! I would love to visit there someday! Again congrats on your race and on the awesome long run! That is so great Emma! Happy to see you’re coming back SO strong from your injury!

  4. I am with you on the ice baths – I just have to jump in! All or nothing! Plus if I ease in it takes longer because I won’t stop my timer until I’m fully submerged.

    I centered my Saturday around the olympic trials!! I worked out while reading the twitter updates, and then I watched when I got home. Oh my gosh, so freaking inspiring!! I can’t wait to run that race in 8 – 12 years!!

    Good for you for listening to your body and postponing your long run. My body (and mind) always benefit from a little extra rest. And it sounds like you had an awesome run! I can’t stand ice baths- I wish I could. I know my muscles would love me for it, but I can’t handle the cold!

    Gah…I want to go to Europe SO badly. It looks so gorgeous. <3

  6. You are one brave girl- I don’t think I can handle an ice bath- even though it’s SO hot in Mumbai! This weekend was great- hectic but super fun! Weekends which minimal planning goes into always tend to be the best! Have a great workout- hope the ice bath pays off!

  8. i sometime come home & hose my legs down with the shower set to ice cold, but the closest i’ve got an ice bath is when i went into the sea after the Brighton Marathon – it was certainly still cold enough in April! But i do think it helped as i was able to get back to the gym the same week. And if i ever recover from this virus & make it to the race i plan on doing the same thing this year! :)

  10. I only took ice baths when it was really hot, so it was not as bad! On some runs I actually looked forwards to them because I was so hot- I can’t imagine having one in the winter. You are right though, they do help. When I don’t have one, I turn the shower to cold and spray my legs for a bit, then turn it back to warm again- that works too.

  11. Ooh Canterbury! I recently did a school project on England and we researched the killing of the Archbishop of Canterbury which was in like year 1000. That is one fast run! Especially for 10 whole miles. I’ve seen people run a 2-mile XC race in miles slower than that. I did watch the trials on TV! I thought Desiree Davila was going to win. Have an awesome week! :)

    I’ve never taken an ice bath and I am honeslty not planning to change that soon… I am just SUCH a baby when it comes to cold water and yeah – cold anything,actually (except for ice cream :P) ! I think I’d be dying taking an ice bath,brr!
    However,good that you mentioned your Email-problem – I already thought you’d hate me because I sent you one lately and never got a reply,haha…

  15. I’ve never taken a ice bath and they terrify me! I’m such a wimp when it comes to being cold. Somehow my boyfriend thinks that it would be hilarious – hmmm …
    I’ve never been to Canterbury – it look gorgeous. I will definitely put it on my list of places to visit.

  16. Ah- I really want to get into ice baths. I just can’t handle the cold. Well mainly my toes which I think would actually freeze off. Still- so many elites swear by them, sometimes daily- so it is sometime to aim for.

    I would have gone crazy in that sweet shoppe!

  19. aww canterbury looks like so much fun!! I hope you bought something from the sweet shop after the race! although there’s really nothing like coffee and lattes :-) and aaah the olympic trials!! I was actually supposed to go (to watch my coach, not to run myself obviously hah), but it was too expensive, but my coach called me after the race – she was hanging out with Desi Davila while talking to me!! (She and Desi are former teammates at Hansons). I thought I was going to die lol. And I totally cried when Kara crossed the finish line. aaaah I want to watch it all over again!

  20. Glad you had so much fun girl and it looks awesome. The ice baths really help me as well so I def understand that one. I went to visit one of my friends in Georgia this weekend which was wicked fun!

    Daniels running formula is by far one of my favorite books for running ever.
