It’s all about the exercise variety!

Hello friends! Smile

Today was all about the exercise variety! This is really important to me when it comes to exercise motivation. Yes, I have a routine that I like, but now and again it’s good to keep things fresh, y’know? Gabriela wrote a great post about this today- check it out!

So, I tried out a new group exercise class today! Livin’ up to my 2011 goals so far! Any guesses as to what class?

BODYCOMBAT!body-combat-poster

As you may know, I am a huge fan of BodyPump (as are many other bloggers!), and both these are two if the Les Mills exercise classes.

So what is BodyCombat? Taken from their website:

“BODYCOMBAT™ is the empowering cardio workout where you are totally unleashed. This fiercely energetic program is inspired by martial arts and draws from a wide array of disciplines such as karate, boxing, taekwondo, tai chi and muay thai. Supported by driving music and powerful role model instructors, you strike, punch, kick and kata your way through calories to superior cardio fitness.” source

A typical class (45 minutes) includes a short warm-up, followed by the main cardio section (lots of kicks, punches and jumping around!), and finally the cooldown which is strength training.

My thoughts

Positives

  • Very high energy! Great cardio- really worked up a sweat!
  • Enjoyable! The cardio section especially is a lot of fun, like dance crossed with martial arts!
  • As with the other Les Mills class I have taken (BodyPump), the instructors (there were two) are great. Really passionate and enthusiastic.

Negatives

  • Didn’t like the music very much! Okay, personal taste and a minor thing, but this was the new release, and a lot of the tracks was not new stuff and was a bit cheesy really!
  • The strength training section was only legs. It would have been great to get in some arms/abs etc.
  • Not long enough? Again, personal preference, but BodyPump is an hour, and I think that’s a better time for this class, as it would allow for more cooldown+strength training.

I did really enjoy the class! Not quite as good as BodyPump in my opinion, but a really great cardio option! I was red, sweaty, and highly unattractive looking when I left the class! But like with all things, you get out as much as you put in. There were people there who were half-heartedly doing the moves, and it didn’t look like they were having fun or getting much out of it! Unlike me of course! ;)

***

I fuelled my class with Ultra Bran cereal+coconut milk+sliced banana:DSC04323

Did you know that Ultra Bran cereal has 15g of fibre per 45g serving!! And I usually have way more than that! That’s a lot of fibre! Surprised smile

After BodyCombat, I finished up the hour’s workout with 15mins on the elliptical doing speed intervals, then headed off to Starbucks to meet a friend for lunch. And did you know that Starbucks have a vegan offering now!

Yummy falafel panini

You won’t believe this, but I was told by one of the baristas to put my camera away! Cheek! Baring teeth smile I didn’t argue though, but silently cursed him…

Later in the evening, I did some yoga and strength training.DSC05343

Instead of the usual flow I do that I learned from my class, I did a strength flow from yogadownload.com. After all, today has been all about the exercise variety! Smile

Tomorrow, I’m getting my bake on! I read through this recipe book that I bought yesterday (see previous post for details)…DSC05309

…and so far, it is my all-time favourite recipe book! Yes, it may well have overtaken the Vegan Cupcakes recipe book and Veganomicon! Surprised smile But I obviously have to test out some of the recipes to see if it lives up to its title! Winking smile

I’m also going to BodyPump tomorrow morning, as well as another new exercise class for me- spinning! Can’t wait! Open-mouthed smile

What are your favourite exercise classes? Have you ever been to any of the ones I’ve mentioned? My favourite has to be BodyPump so far! And what is your all-time favourite recipe book?

  1. I’ve never been to a bodypump class but I keep hearing how awesome they are! My gym just dosnt have those classes :( Bummer… Anyway, I don’t have a favourite cookbook because I’ve never used one!! I know I’m missing out on some great recipes but I never seem to be in the mood to buy myself one :P

    • That's a shame- there are so many classes at my gym too that I'd love to try but just don't fit into my schedule! :(
I've seen the Kind Diet recipes, and they look great! I've heard La Dolce Vegan is good too, so I'll look into that :)

  2. I spotted that panini the other day but had just had lunch. I've had a similar one from Boots that was yummy but not sure if it was vegan.

I used to love body pump but haven't found a decent instructor recently. I think the instructor can really make or break a class.

  3. They have falafel panini's at starbucks? whaaaaaa? Love it!!!!

  4. I've been all about switching up the workouts recently. I really don't want to enter a winter "slump", so I've been investing in the Jillian dvd's and switching my cardio from only running to the elliptical and stairmaster. So far it's working!

  5. Haha! Love the kick shots. They make the post fun. And I did the body combat class a long time ago. I remember it being pretty fun. Either way, its always cool to try new things.

    • Haha thanks! :P
I know, you were one of the people who inspired me to start BP, so THANKS for that! :D Some other classes are fun though, so you might like to try some out!
Tell me about it! I was PEEVED!

  6. I am lovin your blog! I cannot wait to see you pump out some Vegan cupcakes!!

How long have your been vegan?!

I LOVE bootcamp classes with a crossfit.com spin!

  7. i alway sget caught with my camera!! grrr…. they dont understand!

  8. I love spinning class and my yoga class – I haven’t been to body combat or body pump – my gym does do them but there not held at convienent times for me. Oh I don’t think I could come up with a favorite cook book there are so many I love! I do like Sophie Dahls Voluptuous delights, La Dolce Vegan and the recipes in The Kind Diet

  9. I’ve just signed up to the gym today and eager to get stuck in to the spinning classes. I love my Nigella Kitchen book that I got for Christmas. I love the look of that babycakes book. I may have to buy it to add to my very small collection!

  10. AHHHH!!! You are hardcore and absolutely adorable. I am so happy you are trying spin, let me know how it goes:) You are motivating me to try body combat!!! LOVE the kicks!

  11. That falafel panini sounds awesome! I think falafel is one of my top 5 foods, besides dark chocolate. That class sounds fun! I usually go to yoga classes, but I’ve been dying to try out spinning & a bodypump class. I’ve also done jazzercise with my friend & her mom, but it wasn’t that hard – the music was fun though!

  12. Love those action shots! I love body pump, but I have not tried many classes!
Also I cant beleive the starbucks peopel told you to put your camera away- you are doiing them a service after all!

  13. Body combat sounds intense! I'd have to really be geared up for that!

Funny they asked you not to take pics. That happened to me once in Trader Joe's—I think they have a policy against it because they think you're an undercover spy from one of their competitors!

  14. I need to shake up my routine too. I can't wait to see what you make from your cookbook!

  15. Hiya! I also live in London and have just recently started blogging! How long have you been doing it for?
Can't believe Starbux man made you put away your camera….crazy crazy world!
On a happier note, LOVE Vogel's Bran!

  16. What the hell — they told you to put your camera away!? You just gave them free advertising — I always need to know where I can get food on the go!

Very smart to introduce variety to keep yourself motivated. I'm not sure I could cope with Body Combat and the like though — the music gnaws at my brain! ;)

  17. That's a shame. Maybe whenever you're out of town, try and find a local gym that does it? Most gyms do I think…
Hold on, you have NEVER used a cookbook before?!?!? Seriously, this blows my mind!! GET ONE! You won't regret it- promise! :)

  18. Yeah the Boots one isn't vegan sadly…stupid yoghurt dressing!

Totally! The I go to two classes with different instructors, and I definitely prefer one to the other! It definitely makes a huge difference!

  19. Haha, that was my reaction too! :P Can't vouch for what you get in America though…

  20. Great! I'm loving the variety too at the mo! And I want to try these Jillian DVD's everyone seems to rave about!

  21. Thanks girl! :D
I'm not fully vegan- I just eat vegan about 98% of the time! e.g. I have no problem with honey, or things that contain it. But I've been this way for over a year, and it's working for me!
That sounds fun! I don't think my local gym offers that, but I'll look out for it! :)
